Exploring New Perspectives in Architecture and in Life
How Oliver Kilian’s Architecture Exchange in Austria Is Preparing the Youngest Son of Weiku’s Founder to Innovate Within the Family Business

Frederik Oliver Kilian, the youngest son of Weiku do Brasil’s founder, is currently immersed in an academic journey at the University of Innsbruck in Austria. At just 20 years old, Oliver is taking part in an academic exchange at the University of Innsbruck in Austria, where he is studying Architecture. Throughout his journey, he is discovering how the international experience is shaping his vision and contributing to his future within the family business. Follow how this stage is shaping his learning and preparing him for new challenges.
Oliver, as he is more commonly known, explained that his decision to study at the University of Innsbruck was influenced by his desire to explore Europe and by the stories shared by his parents and siblings. “I’ve always wanted to visit Europe, and by choosing UIBK, I aimed to take advantage of the university’s modern infrastructure and strong reputation in the field of architecture,” said Oliver. The University of Innsbruck offers advanced equipment, such as laser cutting and 3D printing, which attracted Oliver due to the high quality of the academic projects.

Regarding the teaching method at UIBK, Oliver highlighted the strong emphasis on independent study. “The educational system here places great value on the independent development of projects,” explained Oliver. “Beyond the mandatory classes, we work on projects that are evaluated based on our progress and final delivery. The required class hours are relatively short — around 3 to 3.5 hours a day — but independent study plays a major role, so I end up spending a lot of time at the university in study groups and project development.” He noted that the university’s focus goes beyond the technical and mathematical aspects of architecture, placing strong emphasis on urban integration and conceptual creation.
Oliver also shared his experience with 3D modeling tools such as Rhino and Grasshopper, which have played a key role in his learning journey. “These programs allow the creation of organic and complex forms. Renowned architects like Zaha Hadid used these tools in groundbreaking projects. Another building designed using such software is the BMW Museum in Munich. I’m learning to use them and believe they’ll be valuable in my education,” said Oliver.

In addition to his academic activities, Oliver has been exploring Austria and its diverse architectural styles. During his personal travels, he encountered buildings that combine wood and stone, with extravagantly painted facades and sloped roofs in Lechtal, and a blend of history and modernity in Innsbruck. “Emperor Maximilian I considered Innsbruck his holiday city, which led to the construction of several luxurious landmarks, such as the Golden Roof in the historic center. The city also features modern areas shaped by rapid growth. It’s a vibrant tourist destination, with ski slopes and mountains for climbing. One curious fact: a quarter of its 140,000 inhabitants are students. The Winter Olympic Games were also held here. These details make Innsbruck a fascinating city to visit,” he noted.
Oliver also highlighted the personal impact of this experience. “I’m learning about independence, financial management, and social skills. Improving my German is an important goal—both for my personal life and for my future role at Weiku,” he said.

Reflecting on how this experience will shape his future role at Weiku, Oliver expressed optimism. “The knowledge and skills I’m gaining in Austria will be valuable for my role at Weiku. Although I’m looking forward to returning to Brazil and rejoining the team, I deeply value this international experience,” he concluded.
Oliver Kilian’s journey in Austria not only enriches his academic background but also reinforces his commitment to the family business and his future role at Weiku. With a broader vision and new skills, Oliver is well prepared to contribute even more to the company’s success upon his return to Brazil.
